Morphingaz
It was clarinet lessons and Eazy E that thrust Morphingaz into a world of jazz music and rap. A wide eyed Sydney bred 12 year old yearning for adulthood through the words of Ice Cube's gangsta fairytales mixed with the bouncy boom bap beats of Public Enemy. Micky became addicted to the genre of hip hop and so he formed his first high school rap crew Illegal Substance. They released their debut opus Off Da Back Of a Truck during the summer of 93/94; The golden era of hip hop. Micky continued to explore his chosen instrument, the turntable. He combined rap with DJing and scratching and in ‘98 he invaded the UK to continue his musical journey through drum n bass, broken beats and turntablism. He earned a spot on the premier UK rap radio show Homegrown presents The Real Deal Rap Show ! Here, a reinvented turntablist, Mickey Morphingaz laid down the beats for the cream of UKs rap scene and eventually toured with a Californian MC named Aphletik. Together they shared stages with Public Enemy, Gangstarr, James Brown, Mos Def and many more. Morphingaz was simultaneously involved in a project fronted by jazz and pop songwriter/producer Mocky. (Producer Matt Corby, Jamie Lidell) Together they formed a studio partnership and occasionally criss-crossed Europe performing alongside Grammy nominated Chilly Gonzalez (Daft Punk collaborator), Jamie Lidell and Feist during their rise. After 7 years in Europe, Morphingaz boomeranged back to Oz to launch his own solo sketches, Me…U – The Business Card EP, which was constructed in various studios throughout the UK and Europe. The liner notes suggested “everyone knows that turntablism is the future of music” ; This was the case for Morphingaz, as he was invited to add turntables and beats to various new projects in Australia. In 2007 he joined The Asthmatix; “a delightfully zany take on instrumental hip hop with their blend of jazz, sample-driven electronica and traditional jewish music”, and this project allowed him to settle into Sydney to work on production of electronic and acoustic music construction with his friends, Daniel Pliner and Daniel Weltlinger. Between 2012 and 2015, the trio spent consecutive European summers performing at festivals and producing new material for their soon to be released album on Micky’s own label, MXD APE. Micky established a base in Berlin over the next 2 years, collaborating on a project with Sydney born Larissa Rate to pursue her Seabourne project. Two singles were released in Europe before Micky moved to Stockholm to pursue love and eventually marry. As the 20 year anniversary of Micky’s musical travel diary drew closer, he and his new family decided to returned to Sydney where he will be able to release a follow-up to his debut EP, Me…2 (Moi Aussie) – The Immigration Application Collaboration Compilation and as the name suggests, it will be a retrospective collection of songs from Micky’s travels of the past 20 years. DJ Morphingaz: On his days off from touring, chasing love and recording, you may have seen Morphingaz in an unsuspecting city, behind a pair of turntables, spinning his own rearranged web of dancefloor booty trap beats, bouncing nu disco n house, funk n soul re edits, or curating an electronic musical adventure through the balkans, brazil and africa, yet always presented with a hip-hop know how. During his career as a DJ/turntablist , some of Micky’s stand out gigs include Performing at sunset at Fusion Festival w/The Asthmatix (Hamburg 2013); opening for Blake Worrell / Puppetmastaz (North West France 2013) Playing for Roger Federer and his team on the night he won his 14th grand slam (Melbourne 2011); Opening The Sydney Festival in 2010 on an 8 story scaffold (Martin Place 2010); The China Fashion awards (Shanghai 2008), The Navy Brown Blues Tour @ Sonar Festival w/Mocky (Barcelona 2007).
